FOUNDER, PAPAYE FAST FOOD
Wealth: Self-made, FAST FOOD
Known For: PAPAYE
OVERVIEW
Mr. Samir Kalmoni had made up his mind during his
young days to start a new business in fast foods which was not an ideal venture
back in the nineties.
After his return from Saudi Arabia, where he had gone
in search of a better life, Samir decided to invest his little savings in a new
business. He then acquired a plot of land at Osu in Accra which he initially
intended for a laundry business. But on his market study, he discovered that
restaurants which served fast and affordable food to corporate workers around
Osu, and the corporate enclaves of Accra were more or less inexistent. Samir
then remodelled his business strategy into fast foods with the vision of trying
to fill in that gap of corporate workers’ inability to get good quality food to
buy at competitive prices and with fast delivery services. In December 1991 and
together with 12 workers, he hit the Osu Oxford Street in Accra with his fast
food joint called PAPAYE which has gone on to become the most successful fast
food brand in Ghana.
